Security agents at the weekend arrested over 162 suspected members of a cult group on Lagos Island.
The security agents, led by Area Commander Edgar Imohimi, stormed the Lagos Island between 9:pm and 10:30pm and started picking the suspects from their hideouts.
While the operation lasted, the entire neighborhood was gripped with fear, as several gunshots were fired by the police and some of the suspects, who attempted to evade arrest.
A resident, who identified himself as Taoreed Raheem, said: “There was exchange of gunshot. We initially thought there was a fight between the police and members of the cult.
“It was rumoured that the members of the cult had killed a police officer and it appeared that the police were out on revenge mission. In fact, the fight lasted till this morning (Sunday morning).”
Sources told National Mirror that the raid was part of the proactive measures to check excesses of the cult group.
It was further gathered that the raid became necessary following a report that residents had been gripped with trepidation over the activities of the group.
A source, who did not want his name mentioned, said: “We acted on tip off. And that is why we had to engage the services of members of the neighborhood watch in the raid. From the raided hideouts, it was evident that some of the suspects could be members of confraternity groups. But that will be determined after investigation.”
