Ajimobi not pursuing anti-student policies - FOSSU

THE Federation of Oyo State Students Union (FOSSU) has denounced the claims by president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Yinka Gbadebo, that the government of Senator Abiola Ajimobi is pursuing anti-student policies in the state.

In a statement released in Ibadan, on Sunday and signed by the president and Senate president of FOSSU, Muili Ahmad and Ayansola Ezekiel respectively, the association said contrary to the claims of NANS president, Ajimobi had, in the last two years, transformed the education sector and catered for the interest of the students of the state.

“Contrary to claims by NANS president that the government has not constituted council for the tertiary institutions in the state, Governor Ajimobi has constituted councils for the three tertiary institutions in the state,” the statement stated.

According to the student body, “the chairman of the council for The Polytechnic, Ibadan, is Professor Oladipo Afolabi, former Head of Service of the Federation, while the chairman of the council of Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo is Professor Olu Okewole, a retired professor of international repute.”

It added that Chief Babatunde Soares was the chairman of the governing board of College of Agriculture, Igbo-Ora, adding, therefore, that the claim by the NANS president was baseless.

“Governor Ajimobi has also re-activated the award of local and foreign scholarship to students of Oyo State indigenes. Apart from paying N100 million bursary and scholarship, Governor Ajimobi has also increased bursary to Oyo State indigenes in the Law School to N150,000 per student,” it added.

The body said the Ajimobi-led administration had also engaged students of higher institutions in dialogue, while it advised the NANS president to ascertain the position of things before and ensure they are based on facts.
