Sixteen Nigerian students from various tertiary educational institutions in the country have been killed in the past three months by trigger-happy Nigeria policemen, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has said.
It asked the inspector general of police, Mohammed Abubakar, to resign over his inability to stop the reckless killing of students by his men.
A press conference was organised in Abuja last week to mark the death of some of NANS officials. These included the association’s senate president, Comrade Donald Onukaogu, and four others who died in motor accident on a trip to University of Uyo to intervene in the killing of a student of the school by a police officer. At the conference, NANS’ national president, Comrade Yinka Gbadebo, called for the arrest and prosecution of the policemen responsible for the killings.
He noted that the police have become the number one enemies of the students and warned that if nothing is done to stop the killings, the student might be forced to defend themselves.
