Lagos airport: Cocaine worth US$460,000 abandoned

Security - Cocaine weighing 5.9kg and worth 74 million naira (US$460,000) has been abandoned by a suspected drug trafficking syndicate at Nigeria's main gateway Murtala Muhammed International Airport in the country's commercial city of Lagos.

According to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the drug was hidden inside industrial equipment that originated from Panama, Central America.

“The luggage was imported from Panama. When nobody came forward to claim ownership, we invited other security agencies and carried out a search. It was in the process of the search that the cocaine was discovered inside the industrial equipment,' NDLEA Commander at the airport Hamza Umar was quoted as saying in a statement by the agency.

NDLEA chief Ahmadu Giade has promised to investigate the illegal shipment and expose those behind it.

“Drug barons have no hiding place. This abandoned seizure is an indication that control measures are working and the country is winning the war on narcotics. This case shall be thoroughly investigated and those that are responsible will be exposed and brought to justice,” he said in the statement, which was reported in the local media Thursday.
