Two men, Akeem Usman, 32 and Raji Moruf, 29 were on Saturday night, at Oke-yanrin area of Abeokuta, Ogun State, allegedly shot dead, by men of the State Vigilance Service.
A witness, Abayomi Awoyejo, told newsmen at their No 18A, Sorinola Street, that tragedy befell them when the vigilance group stormed the area at midnight.
It was gathered that the men had responded, following a distress call that armed robbers were terrorising the area.
Awoyejo, while narrating their ordeal, said that the victims and himself had travelled from Lagos to Abeokuta for the weekend.
“I was playing my palm-top CD in the sitting room when I fell asleep. It was Lateef that woke me up to alert me of the presence of robbers. We frantically searched for the keys to the house. We eventually located the bunch of keys and attempted to lock the gate. Before we knew it, somebody shot at Moruf and while we were trying to give him first aid, the vigilance men invaded our sitting room and started beating us. Our pleas fell on deaf ears. One of us who attempted to challenge them was hit with the butt of the gun. There was confusion after which one of them shot Brother Akeem at close range. He was also hit with a cutlass on his head and the lower part of his abdomen. They also hit me with cutlass while I was shouting for help.
“I watched helplessly as Usman and Moruf bled to death while still pleading with them that we were not robbers. They were almost dead before the vigilance men listened to me and carried them to the hospital,” he said.
The state commander of the group, Major Femi Bisiriyu (rtd), admitted that the killing was done in error.
abeg i go like no who turn vigilante to police? what right have they got to shoot human beings, there is a saying that he who kills say be killed, if they are truly innocent their blood is on the killers head if its orderwise.#Mute
