FORMER Chairman of Ogun Waterside Local Council, Ogun State, Gboyega Bakare, has been sentenced to six months in jail without option of fine.
According to the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC), which prosecuted the case at the Ijebu-Ode High Court, Bakare was sentenced alongside his Administrative Officer 1, Mr. Mohammed Adeyemi Oke.
They were convicted on a 15-count charge bothering on misappropriation of N4 million meant for security. In his judgment, Justice Jipode found the accused guilty on all counts and sentenced. However, the sentence will run concurrently.
The accused persons were alleged to have collected N4 million at N250,000 weekly, from September 2005 to February 2006, for the upkeep of mobile policemen drafted to restore peace to two warring communities within the council, the ICPC said.
Whereas there was truly a communal crisis, investigations revealed that the accused did not spend the money on the policemen, who were catered for by the Ogun State Police Command.
