AARON RAMSEY continued his red-hot goal-scoring form for Premier League table-toppers Arsenal to hand Arsene Wenger the best anniversary present
Wales midfielder
Ramsey bagged an incredible eighth goal in nine club games to seal the
win after Serge Gnabry’s 58th-minute opener.
Ramsey’s
Welsh team-mate Ben Davies scored for Swansea with nine minutes to go,
but it was too little, too late for Michael Laudrup’s men.
And
that gave boss Wenger – celebrating his 17th anniversary in charge of
the Gunners – the ideal end to a crazy day of results which saw title
rivals Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham all
drop points as Arsenal returned to the top of the table.
The
victory extended Wenger’s side’s advantage at the summit to two points
over Tottenham – and also equalled a club record of eight successive
away wins.
Arsenal’s amazing run on the road
started at the Liberty Stadium in March as Wenger saw his side grab the
final Champions League place.
Following a
first-half stalemate, Arsenal gained the lead through an unlikely source
as Gnabry, 18, scored his first goal for the club.
Ramsey was the architect with a deft pass to German Gnabry, who slotted the ball beyond Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm.
Then
former Cardiff ace Ramsey, in the form of his career, doubled Arsenal’s
advantage in the 62nd minute with a thumping right-foot drive after
Jack Wilshere and striker Olivier Giroud linked up.
It
would have replicated the scoreline of Wenger’s first league game in
charge of Arsenal – a 2-0 win at Blackburn in 1996 – but Davies struck
to set up a nervy finish.
Here, the visitors
managed their latest success without the attacking threats of England
duo Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and with Lukas Podolski
also unavailable.
But Arsenal’s current talisman Ramsey overcame a thigh injury to continue his super start to the season.
Swansea
were savaged by injuries in defence with skipper Ashley Williams and
Angel Rangel both ruled out with ankle problems. Yet Laudrup’s side, yet
to win at home in eight attempts, began brightly.
But Arsenal’s current talisman Ramsey overcame a thigh injury to continue his super start to the season
Jose Canas and Jonjo Shelvey were wayward with long-range efforts, but their intent to attack was admirable.
Arsenal
also threatened with Ramsey at the heart of the action. His right-wing
cross allowed Per Mertesacker to head wide before the Welshman flashed a
25-yard shot just off target.
Then Gnabry,
signed from Stuttgart for just £100,000 in 2011, beat three Swansea
players on a mazy run before supplying Giroud, who dragged his shot
wide.
Arsenal turned up the heat in the second period.
From Ramsey’s neat pass, Gnabry capitalised on the open space to fire past Vorm and break the deadlock.
Swansea then had Vorm to thank a minute later when the Dutch goalkeeper thwarted Mesut Ozil from close-range.
But
Ramsey ensured the Welsh side would not be let off the hook by slamming
past Vorm after Wilshere won a 50-50 tackle against Jonathan de Guzman
to set up a lightning counter-attack.
