As the war against the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East of the country continues, the Nigerian Army has alerted of new tactics by the insurgents to circumvent the new security measures in place.
The new methods include resorting to attacks on soft targets and erecting snap road blocks on major highways in the north east.
Director, Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Ibrahim Attahiru, who stated this on Friday in Abuja at a press briefing, however, stressed that the army had been responding swiftly through effective combat patrols both on air and land.
“While the onslaught on the violent extremist organisation continues, the insurgents have devised methods to circumvent the new security measures by resorting to attacks on soft targets and erecting snap road blocks on major highways in the north east.
“Equally, our troops have responded appropriately through effective combat patrols both on land and air in order to dominate the area of operations,” he stated.
Attahiru, who described the United States’ designation of Boko Haram as Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO) as a right step in the right direction, disclosed that the Nigerian Army had continued to carry out full spectrum counter-insurgency operations, with emphasis on both kinetic and non-kinetic operations to shape the operational environment in the north east.
Attahiru also said talks were on between Nigeria and neighbouring countries, on how to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency.
“On the issue of neighbouring countries cooperating in the fight against the insurgents, that is being taken care of at a strategic diplomatic level.
“As to the exact level of cooperation, you might not be able to see it at the lower level, but rest assured that on the government-to-government level, they are talking on how best they can cooperate.
“The Boko Haram phenomenon has gone beyond just North East of Nigeria, it is affecting Niger, Cameroon and Chad,” he said.
