Uruguayan national U-17 coach, Fabian Coito after falling to the barrage of attacks from the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria conceding two goals at the end of the quarter- final clash has admitted that the Eaglets have a chance to win the trophy.
He said that the Nigerian lads were too hot for his team. He conceded that the Nigerian boys were better than his boys and so deserved the quarter-final win even though they had planned to go beyond the last eight stages having played in the finals two years ago. Nigeria defeated Uruguay 2-0 in the ongoing FIFA U-17 World Cup Saturday night to book a re-match with Sweden tomorrow.
Taiwo Awoniyi scored one goal in either half from two Kelechi Iheanacho assists with the Uruguayans struggling in vain to get the ball forward. Coito said: “Nigeria deserved the victory and they move to the next stage of this competition with a good chance. They have a strong team and players with very good skills for this age group.
The most dangerous side of their game is their rapid movement. We didn’t expect the goals and after the first, suddenly came a second. We tried all game but couldn’t find the goal.
The players are upset as we didn’t expect to lose and we were playing to win, but we are going to learn from this and recover. We wanted to go as far as possible in this competition not just the quarter-finals, but now we start preparation with these players for the next level of development, which is the U-20 national team.”
Nigeria which had won the U-17 trophy three times alongside pre-tournament favourites Brazil who were shocked out of the tournament by defending champions Mexico will play World Cup debutants Sweden in tomorrow’s semi-finals clash.
The Swedes remain the only side that has held the Nigerians to a draw having played 3-3 in the group stages.
