Some officials of the Federal University of Technology, Minna branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Monday maltreated journalists who converged on the university to monitor proceedings at the union's National Executive Council meeting which was expected to take a decision to suspend the five-month-old strike embarked upon by lecturers in public universities nationwide.
On arrival at the university, the journalists were barred from getting close to the venue of the meeting based on the orders by the branch Chairman, Dr. Abdulfatai Jimoh.
After arguments, the journalists were allowed entrance but a few hours later, Jimoh ordered them to leave the vicinity, but their reluctance to obey him led to assaults on some of the journalists.

Jimoh, angered by their refusal, resorted to name-calling and hurling insults at them claiming the presence of journalists was not needed.
Meanwhile, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has called for an education summit to chart the way forward for the nation's failing education sector.
Atiku made the suggestion while reacting to the meeting of ASUU, aimed at calling off the strike.
He appreciated the willingness of both ASUU and the federal government to find a common ground in the interest of university students.

He appreciated the willingness of both ASUU and the federal government to find a common ground in the interest of university students.
He urged ASUU and government to put in a place a strong mechanism for resolving crisis to ensure that it does not fester and disrupt academic studies in future.
"It has become imperative for ASUU, the federal government and other stakeholders to put in a place a mechanism for addressing crisis of this nature so that our students and their parents will not be visited with prolonged closure of our universities in future with its concomitant effects," Atiku said.
