The Supreme Court ruled on Friday morning.
The Supreme Court on Friday ruled that the conviction of Bode George, a former People Democratic Party, PDP, leader by a Lagos court was wrong.
The Supreme Court ruled that the offence, contract splitting, for which Mr. George was convicted in 2009 was not yet a crime then. The court also nullified an aspect of the criminal law of Lagos State saying it was not in tandem with the provisions of the constitution.
Mr. George was convicted by Justice Olubunmi Oyewole of the Lagos High Court after being found guilty of 47 of 68 counts of N84 billion fraud filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. He was sentenced to 30 months in prison.
