NIGER State Governor, Alhaji Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, has appealled to the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to make sacrifices in order to resolve the lingering crisis crippling the education sector.
Making the appeal on Saturday at the first national convention and the election of the executive council of the Bayero University Kano Alumni Association, the governor urged the Federal Government to be sincere in tabling the facts as regard the 2009 agreement it signed with ASUU.
He said that although strike was an old -ashioned option in the settlement disputes globally, “it is the only language the government understands.”
According to him, the lingering crisis was beyond human comprehension, calling for urgent resolution, and saying that the genesis of the problem could be traced to unbridled corruption among the executives who siphoned public funds, in the process, inflicted serious damage on the nation’s economy.
For the viability of universities, Aliyu counselled major stakeholders to contribute towards the funding of universities through their alumni associations, pointing out that famous universities in the world, were great primarily due to the financial contributions made by the respective alumni associations.
Aliyu therefore called on the various university alumni associations to emulate the good gesture of the foreign-based members to explore other sources to generate funds to pay salaries.
