ASUP Strike: Students protest in Ogun

Lecturers in Polytechnics embarked on a strike to demand better working conditions and a stop to discrimination against polytechnics.

Some students of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, on Friday embarked on a peaceful rally to protest the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP.
The national secretariat of ASUP had ordered the institution’s chapter to re-join the strike.
The President of the Students Union Government of the Polytechnic, Olaoro Folarin, said his colleagues were determined not to leave the campus until after the completion of the semester.
“We had already spent four months at home before the strike was suspended, we are not ready to go back home,” he said.
He urged the Federal Government to meet the demands of the lecturers.
“We Nigerian students are tired of educational privilege, we want educational rights because education is our right and not a privilege,” he said.
Reacting to the students’ demands, the Registrar of the Institution, Christopher Adeosun, said the management had to comply with the union’s directives.
He said that the institution would re-open as soon as the strike was suspended or called off by the union.
