Conflict: Over 100 killed in Plateau in one month


Over hundred people were killed in four separate attacks in Plateau state between January 6 and February 6 this year. Also, more than 30 people sustained various degrees of injuries while 100 cows were stolen within the same period.

The attacks occurred in the northern and southern senatorial zones of the state.
Investigations by the Sunday Punch showed that the spate of killings in the restive state started on January 6, when gunmen overran  Shonong village of Riyom, killing 30 people and injuring 25 others.
Eleven days later, some gunmen attacked Nwore village in Langtang, in Plateau South, killing three and wounding four. The assailants also went away with more than 100 cows belonging to the natives.
The month of February witnessed attacks on Atakar and Rajat villages of Riyom. Thirty people, including two soldiers, were killed, while scores of others were wounded.
Two days later, another 22 people were killed in Mavo village of Langtang by hundreds of attackers that besieged the village.
Meanwhile, the Special Task Force said they killed 16 of the Mavo attackers, bringing the death toll to 101.
Executive Director of Stefanos Foundation, Mr. Mark Lipdo, quoted an STF source as saying the soldiers killed 16 of the insurgents.
Efforts to get the STF spokesman, Capt. Salisu Mustapha, were not successful, as all calls to his mobile phone were not answered.
