SOME residents of Atinporome, Aroromi Ale and Mowo Phase 2, in the Badagry area of Lagos State have instituted a N100 billion suit against the Lagos State government at a federal high court sitting in Lagos for alleged unlawful demolition of their houses last December.
Joined in the suit are the Inspector General of Police, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State; Ministry of Police Affairs, Lagos State Task Force on Environment and Special Offences Unit.
The Area Commander, Area ‘K’ Police Command, Lagos State Ministry of Physical and Urban Development, Lagos State Land Bureau, Attorney-General of Lagos State and Attorney-General of the Federation are also among the respondents in the suit.
The hearing of the suit, bordering on alleged abuse of fundamental rights and billed for hearing on Friday, could not proceed due to the change of counsel by the applicants.
The new applicants’ counsel, Mr Declam Kemdrimi, told the court that he needed time to study the process and serve all respondents in the matter.
Justice Ibrahim Nasir Buba adjourned the matter till February 10 for hearing.
The applicants, who are 23 landlords, are praying the court to declare that their alleged arrest, torture and detention and alongside 72 others and alleged forceful demolition of 1,500 houses by the respondents for two days on December 16 and 17, is wrongful, illegal, unconstitutional, null and void.
