My Husband Always Beats Me, Wife Tells Court

A housewife, Lola Bolaji of Niger road, Ilorin, Kwara State, on Tuesday prayed an Ilorin Area Court to dissolve her five-year-old marriage to Segun Bolaji on grounds of maltreatment.

The petitioner alleged that Bolaji was too aggressive and had no respect for her.
“My husband always beats me whenever we have a little misunderstanding,” she said.
The 32-year-old told the court that her husband was in the habit of addressing her ‘ridiculously by calling me useless woman’.
She told the court that the marriage was contracted in 2009 and produced two male children – Femi, 5, and Ademola, 3.
She prayed the court to dissolve the marriage as she was tired of the humiliation she was subjected to by her husband.
The defendant denied the allegation, saying he had never maltreated his wife.
“I am not ready to divorce her because of my two children; I love them dearly,” he said.
He promised to respect his wife by treating her fairly and prayed the court for an adjournment to enable him to make a reconciliatory move.
The presiding judge, Mr Yusuf Abdulkareem, adjourned the case till May 7 for report of settlement or continuation of hearing.
