When was the first time you performed on stage?
The first time I appeared on stage was June 14,1984.
Where was the show and what kind of show was it?
It was in the Mushin area of Lagos and the show was a club anniversary. I happened to be a member of the club so they decided that I should perform and I agreed.
How did you prepare for the show?
We rehearsed for about two months. Thank God the show was a success.
Did you panic or exercise some fear as a first timer?
That’s normal for a first timer but thank God I was able to overcome that because I was able to withstand the pressure and at the end of the show, people were coming to congratulate me.
What about your first concert?
That was when i was invited by Dapo Adelegan of the then Lekki Sun Splash show to perform at Lekki Beach. I will say that was a starting point for my concert shows because it was different from the regular owambe show because you need to perform to the crowd’s satisfaction before they can hail you.
Then and now, do you do anything or take something to energise or ginger you before going on stage?
What I do is to pray to God to give me a good show and after that I go on stage to perform. I don’t drink, smoke or take any stimulant because my performance is natural. However, I normally take water and that is when I have the feelings that my throat is getting dry. I take water and the voice just comes alive.
What of your baritone voice?
The voice is just natural. Years back some people said my voice was so thick and was not audible but now it is the same voice they are appreciating. So I thank God for that.
Did you give it any treatment?
No, it’s Gods doing and it’s natural. The only precaution I take is that whenever I have a show I take my time to relax and avoid shouting or stressing my voice.
How do you relate with your female fans?
Naturally we can’t date every female fan. However, I know how to relate with my female fans because we cannot do without them; they are part and parcel of the music industry.
What crazy things have a female fans done to you?
There are lots of thing they do. Some will tell me the love me. Some will say ‘I want to kiss you.’ And if I want a kiss I will take it from her and if I don’t want I just say no and life goes on.
Can you mention one that is very crazy and extreme?
What can be crazier than saying I love you, I want to sit on your laps or can you marry me among other vulgar things.
None has stripped herself naked for you?
No and I don’t pray to see that.
What of male fans?
Male fans don’t do crazy thing other than saying that they appreciate you and say ‘well done. I love your dress,’ among other things.
After your performance do you go back stage?
No I don’t go back stage. Immediately I finish performing I enter my car and zoom off.
What are the three most important things you take to shows?
Good clothes, nice wrist watches, shoe and nothing else.
