The number of applicants who want to take part in the Mars One project has almost reached 80,000.
Mars One, a Dutch company’s project that aims to fly four people to the red Planet every two years, starting in April 2023 has reportedly received more than 78 000 entries since it announced the mission, reports nbcnewyork.com.
According to time.com, the company is expecting 500,000 applicants by the time applications close on August 31.
Entries have been received from 120 countries across the world including South Africa.
"These numbers put us right on track for our goal of half a million applicants," the guardian.co.uk quoted the founder of Mars One, Bas Lansdorp saying.
"Mars One is a mission representing all humanity and its true spirit will be justified only if people from the entire world are represented. I'm proud that this is exactly what we see happening."
SA DJ, Xabiso Gxoyiya aged 23, is among the enthusiastic entrants who are hoping to be the first inhabitants of the planet.
In his application video, Gxoyiya explains that although he realises that the trip comes with a certain amount of risk, he’s still prepared to do it because ‘I believe that in life with no risks there’s no reward’, he says.
“I’m confident, I’ve got guts, and I really believe Mars can be our second home and I can play a role in building that home for us,” he adds in the 45 second clip posted on the Mars One website.
Those who make it through the application process will undergo training before shooting off to another planet with little chance to no chance of returning.
