Nigerian candidates achieve poor results in 2013 university entrance exam - Only 10 candidates of the 1.6 million students who sat for the 2013 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), scored 300 and above of the maximum 400 marks, according to local media reports which quoted the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
JAMB, which conducted the examinations in 3,168 centres across Nigeria and two other countries last Saturday, said that 628 candidates scored between 270 and 299, according to the preliminary results released by the board.
JAMB’s Registrar, Dibu Ojerinde, who announced the results in Abuja, the Nigerian capital city, Friday, indicated that the Computer Based Test (CBT) would continue from 18 May and end 1 June, 2013, in centres that have been certified by the Board.
He noted that a total of 12,110 results out of the total 1,644,110 candidates who sat for the paper and pencil test and dual based test are being withheld for examination malpractices.
Results of another 68,309 candidates from various centres are to undergo further screening to ascertain their culpability.
Further analysis, he said, indicated that a total of 40,692 results were invalid due to either multiple shading or no shading at all while 47,974 candidates failed to write the examinations.
He warned future candidates to be wary of Internet fraudsters who go about telling candidates that they can upgrade their results in one form or the other on their behalf.
Further analysis of the results released shows that 1,670,833 candidates applied to universities, 28,977 candidates to polytechnics, 28,445 candidates to colleges of education while only 25 candidates applied to innovation enterprises institutes.
